πŸ§€ Indulge in the creamy, cheesy layers of this Baked Ziti recipe that’s perfect for a hearty family meal.
🍝 Enjoy the comforting blend of savory sausage, rich cheese sauce, and tender pasta in every bite.

  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 6 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 pound (approximately 450 grams) ziti pasta

1 pound (approximately 450 grams) ground Italian sausage (sweet or hot, or vegetarian alternatives)

1 cup diced yellow onion

4 garlic cloves, roughly chopped

24 ounces (about 680 ml) marinara sauce (jarred or homemade)

15 ounces (about 425 ml) tomato sauce

1 teaspoon sea salt

1 tablespoon Italian seasoning

Β½ cup heavy cream (optional for richness)

2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese

8 ounces (about 225 grams) fresh mozzarella, thinly sliced

ΒΌ cup grated Parmesan cheese

ΒΌ teaspoon red chili flakes (for serving)

2 tablespoons minced fresh basil

Instructions

1-First, preheat the oven to 375Β°F (190Β°C) and position the rack in the center. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and cook the ziti pasta until just barely al dente, then drain. In a large Dutch oven or stockpot, cook the sausage, onion, and garlic over medium-high heat until the sausage is browned and onions softened, about 8 minutes.

2-Next, drain excess fat from the pot. Add marinara sauce, tomato sauce, sea salt, Italian seasoning, and heavy cream; stir to combine. Mix in the cooked ziti and 1Β½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese thoroughly. This step ensures the pasta layers absorb the flavors of the cheese sauce.

3-Transfer the mixture to a 9Γ—13 inch baking dish and top with fresh mozzarella slices and the remaining Β½ cup shredded mozzarella. Cover with foil and bake for 20 minutes until the pasta is tender. Remove the foil, sprinkle Parmesan cheese on top, and bake uncovered for an additional 5 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
