๐Ÿž This Cornbread Dressing recipe captures classic Southern flavors, delivering a comforting and hearty side dish perfect for family gatherings.
๐Ÿฅ„ The blend of toasted bread, savory vegetables, and warm spices creates a moist and flavorful dish that complements any holiday meal.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 25 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

1 batch homemade cornbread

6 slices white bread

1 tablespoon olive oil

1/2 cup salted butter

1 yellow onion, diced

1 green bell pepper, diced

3 ribs celery, diced

3/4 teaspoon salt, divided

2 1/2 teaspoons poultry seasoning, divided

1/2 teaspoon dried sage

1/2 teaspoon onion powder

1/2 teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper

4 1/2 cups chicken broth

2 large eggs, beaten

Instructions

1-First, preheat the oven to 350ยฐF (175ยฐC). Crumble the homemade cornbread and white bread into small pieces and spread them on a baking sheet. Then, toss the white bread with 1 tablespoon olive oil, 1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning, and 1/4 teaspoon salt, toasting it in the oven for 15 minutes until lightly golden. Set it aside once done.

2-Next, melt 1/2 cup salted butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Sautรฉ the diced yellow onion, green bell pepper, and celery for about 5 minutes until they soften and release their aroma. This step builds the flavor base that makes the dressing so special.

3-In a large bowl, combine the toasted cornbread and white bread with the sautรฉed vegetables and melted butter. Add the remaining 1/4 teaspoon salt, 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning, dried sage, onion powder, and black pepper, mixing well. Gradually stir in the 4 1/2 cups chicken broth in two parts to ensure even absorption, followed by the 2 large beaten eggs.

4-Pour the mixture into a greased 9ร—13 inch baking dish and spread it evenly. Bake for 50 minutes or until the top turns golden brown. Let it cool slightly before serving warm, and enjoy the compliments from your guests.

Notes

๐Ÿž Prepare cornbread a day or two in advance to dry out for better moisture absorption, or toast briefly if made the same day.
๐ŸŒพ Use a mix of large and small bread crumbs for varied texture.
๐Ÿฆƒ For richer flavor, prefer homemade or leftover turkey broth over store-bought.
โฒ Adjust seasonings before adding eggs.
๐Ÿ”ฅ Avoid overbaking to keep the dressing moist with a lightly golden top.
๐Ÿฅซ Store leftovers airtight in the fridge 3-4 days; reheat with broth or water to maintain moisture.
